Saffron is largely cultivated and harvested by hand. Due to the amount of labor involved in harvesting, saffron is considered one of the world’s most expensive spices. The stigmas are also used to make medicine. Saffron is used for asthma, cough, whooping cough (pertussis), and to loosen phlegm (as an expectorant).saffron is a powerful spice high in antioxidants. It has been linked to health benefits, such as improved mood, libido, and , as well as reduced PMS symptoms and enhanced weight loss. “One saffron bulb can keep producing flowers for 15 days if it is healthy,” , my father based told me, from . But “the floods damaged the quality of crop, and the drought damaged the quality of the soil. Saffron requires a very precise constituency (called karewa), a moist soil rich in humus content. Now a lot of bulbs that erupt are unfit for producing flowers, or diseased
The saffron industries in Kashmir have been dying a silent death over the last decade, with production rates for both commodities witnessing up to45 percent declines in some areas of the Kashmir Valley.
A growing market for cheap, ‘fake’ saffron – either chemically manufactured or ‘cut’ with additives to increase its weight – has dealt a harsh blow to traditional, world renowned saffron producers and sellers in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, a mismanaged government monopoly over the silk industry coupled with an invasion of cheap Chinese silk has choked local production, pushing thousands of producers out of business.
Many farmers believe in the religious sanctity of their lands, seeing the newer technologies as an unwelcome force. “This land is sacred,” he says. “These pipes are an intrusion to the divine.”
What government has done?
In order to preserve the saffron government of India had sanctioned a mission called National Mission on Saffron in 2010, at first the GOI sanctioned crores rupees to increase the cultivation of saffron in the whole.
But i think government has taken this step of piping and all very late because almost land has lost its life… It’s like giving a life to a dead person. So according to my point of view is that it has been too late. Because almost farmers life was fully depended on this.
Ohhhh land I lost u.
I was not myself interested in this work. Even I never realized that where from and which place I am belonging. At my childhood I always used to stay away from this when all family members were busy with this and spending day and night with this work . At that time nearly 10 years before October and November season was busy season of people and charming season of pampore people but from last 10 years It look like now normal months of farmers of pampore no one seems now busy with this because everything has been destroyed. I always used to told my parents I will do every work what ever u will give me but to do this work means (khudh ko sar dhard uthana)and I felt like irritated when saffron season came and my parents basically my father used to told me it’s because of you people (today’s generation) everything is going from our hands because every work needs hard work and you children think it’s burden and nothing else but at that time I never took these things serious. He told you you will realize one importance But everything has been lost at that time because we were small at that time. But now seriously I realize that I have lost most special days of my life.
